Farr Nezhat Surgical Video Award | Professor Tu Hua: Renal Venous Angle and Standardized Technique of Single-Port Laparoscopic Paraaortic Lymphadenectomy

Recently, good news came from the 2026 Annual Meeting of the Society of Gynecologic Oncology (SGO) held in San Juan, Puerto Rico: Professor Tu Hua from the Department of Gynecology, Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center, became the first global winner of the Farr Nezhat Surgical Video Award with his surgical work Renal Venous Angle and Standardized Technique of Single-Port Laparoscopic Paraaortic Lymphadenectomy, and received the award at the Plenary Session.

As the most influential academic event in the global field of gynecologic oncology, the Surgical Showdown of the SGO Annual Meeting has always been a "peak arena" for masters' competition. Entries are required to be benchmark in terms of surgical philosophy, technological innovation and clinical application value. Only 2 works were selected for plenary presentation and live broadcast at this year's SGO, from Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center and Cleveland Clinic (USA) respectively, and Professor Tu Hua from SYSUCC finally won the Farr Nezhat Surgical Video Award.

Award-Winning Surgical Work Showcase

Award Origin: Named After a Master, Tribute to Innovation and Inheritance

The Farr Nezhat Surgical Video Award is named after Professor Farr Nezhat, a world-renowned gynecologic oncologist and pioneer of minimally invasive surgery. Professor Nezhat is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, a Fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, and the founder and former President of the International Society for Endoscopic Surgery. He is hailed as a pioneer in the application of laparoscopic technology in gynecologic oncology.

To pay tribute to Professor Farr Nezhat's outstanding contributions, SGO established the Farr Nezhat Lifetime Achievement Award, which has been awarded only once (to Professor Dennis Chi from Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in 2024). The Farr Nezhat Surgical Video Award was launched for the first time at this SGO meeting, aiming to inherit and carry forward the spirit of surgical innovation and pioneering advocated by Professor Nezhat.

Professor Tu Hua is the first global recipient of the Farr Nezhat Surgical Video Award. This historic breakthrough fully demonstrates the international recognition of Chinese scholars' surgical concepts and techniques. At the plenary presentation, Professor Tu Hua explained the key steps and technical points of the surgery to global colleagues in detail. His precise surgical operation, innovative surgical philosophy and accurate explanation won warm applause and unanimous praise from the audience, leaving a deep impression of "Chinese Surgical Technique" on international counterparts.

Step-by-Step Climb: From Three Consecutive National Championships to International Honor

Since 204, Professor Tu Hua's surgical works have been presented at many international conferences, including the Annual Meeting of the International Gynecologic Cancer Society, the Annual Meeting of the Asian Society of Gynecologic Oncology, the Annual Meeting of the European Society of Gynecologic Oncology and the SGO Annual Meeting. He has successively won the championships in national surgical video competitions held by ObGynNet China, the Gynecologic Oncology Branch of Chinese Anti-Cancer Association, and the Gynecology Branch of Chinese Medical Doctor Association. Relevant research papers have also been published in Gynecologic Oncology, a top journal in the field of gynecologic oncology.

The journey from three consecutive national championships to step-by-step progress on the international stage and finally winning this honor confirms the profound accumulation and international competitiveness of Chinese gynecologists in the field of minimally invasive surgery.

Outlook: Benefiting More Patients with Precision Minimally Invasive Technology

Professor Tu Hua stated that the value of technology lies not in "showcasing skills", but in benefiting more patients practically. Under the supervision of Professor Liu Jihong, an expert in gynecologic oncology, his research interests include the molecular mechanism of lymph node metastasis in cervical cancer and the application of sentinel lymph node biopsy, as well as technological innovation of single-port laparoscopy in gynecologic oncology. He has presided over 1 National Natural Science Foundation for Young Scholars and 1 General Program of Guangdong Natural Science Foundation, participated in the design of multiple investigator-initiated phase III clinical studies, and published more than 20 papers as the first or corresponding author in recent years, including New England Journal of Medicine, Gynecologic Oncology, International Journal of Gynecologic Cancer, Annals of Surgical Oncology, International Journal of Clinical Oncology, Journal of Surgical Oncology.
