Before starting this issue of "The Story of Obstetrics and Gynecology", we should first understand some proper terms.
1. Natural history
It is the science of the study of animals, plants, minerals, physiology and other departments. After France and Germany proposed "biology" in the 18th~19th centuries, biology also became an independent discipline.
2. Natural history
It can identify many things, and it is also the abbreviation of natural history, but also a general term for zoology, botany, mineralogy, physiology, etc.
3. Museums
"Cihai" (Shanghai Dictionary Publishing House) is described as a museum, which is a cultural and educational institution that displays, researches, and preserves physical objects of material and spiritual culture, as well as natural specimens. It can be divided into revolutionary, ethnic, historical, military, local chronicles, nature, art, medicine, science and technology, etc.
According to their different natures, policies and tasks, Chinese museums systematically display cultural relics, models, specimens and other exhibits, carry out dialectical materialism and historical materialism education, patriotism and revolutionary tradition education to the broad masses of the people, enrich the people's scientific knowledge and cultural life, and provide information and reference for promoting industrial and agricultural production, scientific research and artistic creation.
The New Compilation of Chinese Cihai (Guangming Daily Publishing House, Volume 1) describes the structure of cultural relics or specimens that are collected, stored, studied, and exhibited, involving history, culture, art, politics, science and technology, etc. There are revolutionary, natural, military, scientific, medical and other museums.
4. Museum
As a noun, it is also a museum, such as the Palace Museum in Beijing, the National Palace Museum in Taipei (located in Taipei, Taiwan Province, China). It is usually understood that the scope and content of "academy" are larger and more than that of "pavilion".
Because there are still unearthed cultural relics, original objects, materials, etc. in various countries and places around the world; the development and inheritance of the world's intangible cultural heritage; There are more and more museums at the national, municipal and private collections, and the development of modern science, involving a large area, so that people today can learn more about the development of history and science and technology, and play the purpose of explaining the proper terms of museums mentioned above.
Now there are many museums, only Hangzhou, as far as the author knows, there are the world-famous Liangzhu Museum and Zhejiang Provincial Museum; Hangzhou's unique tea, ceramics, fans, silk, scissors, West Lake Expo Museum, etc. The museum has the first male obstetrician and gynecologist to study in Germany in the early years before liberation, who opened a private business in Hangzhou and later became the first director of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology of Hangzhou Red Cross Hospital (now Zhejiang Hospital of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine).
In various countries around the world, there can be countless and endless content related to women in domestic museums (such as about male farming and women's weaving, clothing, dressing, etc.), but as an exclusive museum with more direct and close indirect relationship with obstetrics and gynecology, this is rare, and it can even be said to be rare or rare. Based on the knowledge of the author who is only sparse and knowledgeable, I will share with you as follows:
IUDs are widely used female birth control measures. Thousands of years ago, in ancient Egypt, in order to prevent camels from becoming pregnant during long-distance desert travel, pebbles were put into the camel's uterine cavity to achieve contraceptive effects. Later, a German doctor accidentally found a bone in the uterus of an infertile woman after an autopsy, and has since paid attention to the concept that foreign bodies can cause contraception in the uterus. Many doctors have created and studied a variety of IUDs, which are mostly uniform or circular-like in the early days, and are in different shapes of rings, so they are commonly known as "IUDs". Since then, some have not been ring-shaped, and gradually most of them are non-ring-shaped, and almost all of them are still hetero-shaped, so they cannot be called "rings". Correct and formal medical terminology should be called "IUD". Stories about everything from camel contraception to all kinds of IUDs are common. The 24th issue of "Professor Shi Tells the Story of Obstetrics and Gynecology" of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Network discusses the origin and development of the IUD, in addition to being mainly used for contraception, its function is now more expanded, and it can be used for many other gynecological diseases such as menorrhagia and dysmenorrhea, which are recorded and described in detail in the article. The author also visited the "IUD Museum" built in Vienna, Austria, and there are also relevant texts and photos in "Professor Shi Tells the Story of Obstetrics and Gynecology". (Professor Shi Tells the Story of Obstetrics and Gynecology Issue 24: From Camel Contraception to Seeing All Kinds of Intrauterine Devices). In December 2025, I was fortunate to find in the corridor of the history of Guangdong Maternal and Child Health Hospital that the "plastic birth control flower" invented by Dr. Luo Zilan in 1963 is still archived and publicly displayed in the "IUD Museum" in Belgium. In the book "Family Planning Theory and Practice" (Guangdong Science and Technology Press, 1988), edited by Lu Zilan, there is also a description of this kind of "plastic birth control flower", which was designed by Guangdong Province in 1963 and is made of high-pressure polyethylene and medicinal barium injection, with three lobes at the upper end being elastic, which can overlap or spread out according to the shape of the uterine cavity, and the lower end is synthetic with a handle, and there are two nylon wires at the tail. The overall shape is similar to that of the uterine cavity, and there are three models: large, medium and small. There are also many and diverse "intrauterine devices" at home and abroad. Decades ago, in the United States, 75-year-old Finley opened a real physical "Menstrual Museum" in the basement of New Carrollen, Maryland, which was creative. It took him 5 years and thousands of dollars to create. In the past 20 years, he has displayed thousands of pages of commemorative exhibits related to menstruation, from tampons to magazine advertisements, and generations of women have used a variety of materials to deal with menstruation-related matters, so that people can understand menstruation and the methods and supplies for dealing with menstrual blood when menstruation comes. For the Menstrual Museum, interested parties can check out Lecture 7 of "Professor Shi Tells the Story of Obstetrics and Gynecology" on the Obstetrics and Gynecology Network (Professor Shi Tells the Story of Obstetrics and Gynecology Issue 7: Eliminating Misconceptions about Menstruation and Respecting Religion). The "Sanitary Nail Museum" is actually one of the contents included in the "Menstrual Museum", which can be found in Lecture 9 of "Professor Shi Tells the Story of Obstetrics and Gynecology" on the Obstetrics and Gynecology Network. The content of this lecture "Sanitary Nail Museum" also tells and displays sanitary napkins, menstrual cups, and how to correctly understand menstruation and use sanitary napkins after menarche in girls. (Professor Shi tells the story of obstetrics and gynecology in the ninth issue: the story of sanitary napkins in ancient and modern China and abroad). The world's first "Vagina Museum" is open in the UK, funded by private fundraising, and is completely free of charge. Trying to break stereotypes and misconceptions about the female body. But even abroad, the opening of the world's first "vagina museum" was extremely difficult, and it only lasted for 2 years. The vagina museum is mostly composed of popular science exhibition boards, which clarifies the public's myths about the vagina, shows the world's prejudice and discrimination against women, and breaks the taboos in the eyes of the world. We think that a woman's vagina is not the whole of the genitals, but only a part of the reproductive organs and a part of the anatomy of the female genitals. The Vagina Museum uses models to show the structure of the female genitals, from the structure of the vagina, to menstruation and childbirth, to the safety of sexual life, and the exhibition is without scruples. It tells women to face up to their bodies and eliminate social stigma and shame about sex; Tell girls that normal care and cleaning of the pussy is not dirty at all, it is just a part of the human body. The museum generously displays menstrual cups, sanitary napkins, etc., so that girls can correctly understand menstruation and sanitary napkins, and teach girls to treat their bodies healthily. Society and the public have always ridiculed inexplicably and maliciously, and have always been malicious and humiliating women. For example, the statement that "the darker a woman's labia, the higher the frequency of sexual life in girls", alluding to girls' promiscuity and lack of self-love. In fact, this is only an adult woman, and the increase in female sex hormones naturally sinks and changes color, which has nothing to do with sex life. The museum also gave us a lot of popular science, such as: not every woman has a uterus. But because of physical defects, they were unable to have children, and they had another "crime", called "stone girls". But the museum has been described as "shameless" and "not ashamed"...... Because of pressure from all sides, still under the shackles of religious, social and other shackles of gaze and discrimination against women, this British-established and only "vaginal museum" in the world was finally closed. "Tintin" refers to the penis of mammals. In the past, 98% of mammals still have bones in the penis. The world's only exclusive museum is in Reykjavik, Iceland, which houses more than 280 specimens of 93 animals, and the treasure of the town hall is the sperm whale standing up to 1.7 meters high, taller than an adult; the only human specimen in the museum is from a 95-year-old man, who has long shrunk into a small lump of meat. Back in the African savannah 700,000 years ago, when human males still had "Tintin" bones. For 98% of mammals, this bone is a reproductive weapon, allowing them to mate quickly during estrus and even have multiple partners at the same time. But for human ancestors who needed to run, hunt, climb, tree, and flexibly avoid wild beasts, this hard bone was simply a burden. You may break your body when you hit a stone while running, get stuck between the branches when climbing, and even affect your balance when avoiding natural enemies. In human evolution, it is the only primate that is in heat all year round and does not have a fixed estrus period, and can engage in intimate behavior anytime and anywhere without waiting for a specific season. This means that we no longer need to rely on bones to pursue mating speed, but can build deep emotional bonds through longer periods of time. With the evolution of the human brain, complex social relationships have gradually formed, and the "Tintin" bone has become an obstacle to emotional connection. With this bone, mating becomes a purely physiological need without any emotional exchange. But what humans need is emotional communication, long-term partnerships, and family stability. The disappearance of this bone forces humans to develop more complex emotional communication and social skills. In the Jintan Maoshan Tourist Area of Changzhou City, Jiangsu Province, there is a "Chinese Culture Museum", with different opening and closing times and visitors, and there is a sign that "parents and teachers can visit below", making a clear announcement at the door of the museum. There are some books and beds on "ancient Chinese sexual preservation" and some molds in the museum. There are also porcelain, vases, basins, paintings hanging on the wall, sex books, Tibetan head books, and some jade, sex-related items, and medicine stoves (small stoves specializing in burning kidney and aphrodisiac decoction) in the bottom of the women's wedding box, witnessing the combination of health preservation and herbal medicine in the room. Wuchang in Wuhan has the Darin Student Life Culture Museum, which is also a social science sexology museum with a large scale and many exhibits. Exhibiting domestic and foreign sex books and objects. Objects such as sex books, "RVs" (for sexual activities), and fine porcelain (painted sexual intercourse shapes on the surface) are all related to sexual culture. There are ancient spring beds and spring chairs in China, and there are benches next to the bed to cool off. there are also many foreign countries such as Japan, South Korea, the United Kingdom, Thailand, India and other countries related to sex books and palace pictures; there are also stone and porcelain for various sexual positions; the "hiddenness" under the hypocritical priest's altar; the "hysteria" of female masturbation (refers to the phenomenon of pathologization of female masturbation, often associated with mental illness or moral stigma); there are primitive stone tools and molds of male sexual organs; the words about sex on the curtains of various musical instruments; Japanese art, printmaking, color painting, oil painting, etc.; There are also some foreign exhibits, such as electric toys, various sex products such as plastic and latex. In many sculpture art galleries abroad, there are nude statues of men and women. The British Museum has the "Spring Palace Map", various forms of spring chairs, spring stools, and books for men and women; Founded in 1825, the Casava Sculpture Exhibition in Italy has many large-scale normal-sized sculptures of men and women nude for sex. It turned out that the museum was a memorial to the master sculptor Antonio. the Holistic Museum of Canova; The Museum of Fine Arts in Florence, Italy, the Rhodes Archaeological Museum in Athens, Greece, and the Louvre Museum in Paris, France, also have "Spring Palace Pictures", various forms of spring chairs, spring stools, books, and statues of male and female love. Some nude statues are in front of the doors of the square or the city hall. In 2025, the Tongji Medical College of Huazhong University of Science and Technology and the Wuhan Dalin Student Life Culture Museum jointly held a research meeting on ancient Chinese sexual culture in Wuhan. In the author's understanding, "adult products" refer to sex-related male/female products, which are used to increase pleasure, treat frigidity, low sexual function, etc. and improve the quality of sexual life; There are also items that use drugs (external/internal/use of devices) to stimulate and assist to achieve the goal; Some also have contraceptive and other effects. The simplest and most used are condoms (mainly for men, but also for a few women), oral/injectable/implanted contraceptives, intrauterine devices inserted into the uterus, cervical caps for the vagina and other devices. During World War II, inflatable dolls were made by Hitler and others in Germany to solve the physiological needs of soldiers, and then made of silicone and other materials, and now they have developed into robots (male and female). In some hotels at home and abroad, there is another chair that is the same length as the end of the bed behind the double bed, which is also used as a spring chair or stool, not for placing clothes. In 2025, the National (Guangzhou) Sexual Culture, Adult Products, and Health Products Expo (hereinafter referred to as the Guangzhou Sex Culture Festival) will open at the same time as the Canton Fair, attracting a large number of people to watch. there is also an adult market opposite Guangzhou Railway Station; Shanghai will also hold an adult products exhibition from April 17 to 19, 2026; Hangzhou also held it once nearly 20 years ago. At the beginning, people will have ideological concerns, shyness, and embarrassment when entering the adult products exhibition or buying adult products, and wear hats, masks, etc. when entering. Now it is gradually opening, more and more people are entering, mainly men, and the number of female visitors is gradually increasing. However, it is still a place that minors should not enter (sex education for children and adolescents is very important, described separately). People are becoming more and more open-minded, so it is difficult to find a ticket for adult products museums and exhibitions in one place, indicating that people are constantly improving their understanding of adult products, and there are also needs to solve physiological needs or assist in therapeutic functions. The China Women and Children's Museum is located in Dongcheng District, Beijing, and is the first national first-class museum with the theme of women and children in China, with a women's hall, a children's hall and a special hall, which was officially opened on January 10, 2010. According to the information of the Window of the Capital in September 2025, the museum has a construction area of about 35,000 square meters, and the museum has collected nearly 30,000 domestic collections. As the theme museum of women and children, the main purpose is to collect, exhibit and study cultural relics of women and children, promote the development of women and children's causes, and serve the majority of women and children. These collections reflect the changes in the living status and status of Chinese women and children in various historical eras, cultural customs, outstanding figures and social contributions, etc., and constitute a picture scroll spanning 5,000 years of history, involving economic, political, military, culture, health, sports and other fields. Among them, the Ancient Women's Pavilion takes history as the context, showing the irreplaceable important role and great contribution of ancient Chinese women in promoting the progress of human civilization. The Modern Women's Pavilion records the glorious process of Chinese women consciously sharing the fate of the motherland and breathing with the nation in the past century of modern history, and constantly seeking their own liberation in the struggle for national democracy and people's liberation. The Contemporary Women's Pavilion displays the remarkable achievements made by Chinese women in the great practice of socialist construction and reform and opening up over the past 60 years, as well as their colorful style of the times. In addition, there are exhibition venues such as the International Friendship Hall, the Women's Art Museum, and the Women's Clothing Hall. The exhibits of the Ancient Women's Museum fully introduce and display the history of blood and tears of ancient women, which is a sad museum. The rusty chastity belt in the showcase makes people feel numb on the scalp, what is the difference between this and the torture tool? The cold iron ring and the three-inch golden lotus are also shocking. The three-inch golden lotus is not yet the size of a palm, and the girl is forcibly pressed on a foot binding stool when she is three or four years old, wrapped her feet tightly with cloth, like broken bones, to resist natural growth. The leading advocates of liberation were persecuted to death. What is even more ironic is that the ten miles of red makeup and red silk are laid on the ground, sending women from one cage to another with dignity. From birth to marriage, his life was accompanied by the discipline of daughters, three obediences and four virtues, starvation to death, and great loss of integrity. It is ironic that there is a three-inch golden lotus on the left, a chastity belt on the right, and a chastity archway in the middle. They could have become military commanders like Shang Dynasty women; For example, the diplomat of Mrs. Feng in the Han Dynasty; Historians like Ban Zhao were locked up and imprisoned in their minds, exchanging a lifetime of freedom for the most cruel false name. Later, women walked out of the deep boudoir, no longer trapped in a world, emancipated the mind, freedom of marriage, entered the school, and became economically independent, which was the brave struggle of the ancestors, paved the way for the freedom of the latecomers, and was the support of generations of female predecessors, so that we can freely study and choose a career today. "Sex" is an inexhaustible and unclear story; want to talk but are unwilling or dare; It is not appropriate to be open or too public about private and secret issues, which are related to men and women, marital life, fertility, medicine, disease, medicine, congenital development, birth defects, spiritual, social, economic, business, occupational, political, religious, ethnic, etc. From a medical point of view, it is closely related to obstetrics and gynecology, andrology, urology, sexology, psychiatry, pharmacy, etc., so readers should know, understand and pay attention to it.
